A thin or poorly bonded coating will chip, flake, or show the substrate color almost immediately. A robust finish will feel continuous — no step-down at the edge, no chalky texture.

Feel the weight and identify what's producing it

Weight is often cited as a quality proxy, but it's only meaningful in context. A well-constructed item feels dense and balanced — weight distributed predictably based on where the substantial materials are. Something that feels unexpectedly heavy in the handle but light at the body, or heavy overall but hollow-sounding when tapped, may be using filler material or thin-gauge metal to hit a target heft.

Inspect hardware for material match and mechanical function

Zippers, hinges, drawer slides, clasps, and handles are functional components that also signal overall quality investment. Operate every moving part you can access: zippers should glide without catching, drawer slides should extend fully and return smoothly, hinges should move without creaking or binding. Any resistance or misalignment in a new product will only worsen with use.

Check that hardware finish matches — or intentionally contrasts — the rest of the product in a cohesive way. Mixed-finish hardware (some brass, some chrome, some painted) that doesn't follow a clear design logic usually means components were sourced inconsistently. Marketing materials and display units show you the best angle. Quality manufacturing shows up consistently on all sides.
